Frequently asked questions about dms and ncts error codes

What does an error code in DMS mean?
A DMS error code points to the data element that Customs does not accept. The code does not say why the element is wrong, only which field or combination causes the rejection.
Why does the same error code mean something else on two files?
Because the code names the element, not the cause. A message about a licence can mean the number is missing, the EORI on the licence does not match, or the licence does not cover this declaration type.
How do you find the real cause of a DMS rejection?
Start with the element the code names, compare it with the source document and with the licence or master data attached to it. The cause almost always sits in that combination, not in the code itself.
Do AGS error codes still appear in DMS?
No. DMS uses its own list. Old Sagitta or AGS codes do not identify the rejection, and the text of the message takes precedence over a national code from a previous system.
How do you stop the same error code coming back?
Record the correction in the master data or in the rule per principal, not only in the rejected file. As long as the error is filled again on the next file, the same code comes back.
Is every DMS error code in this list?
Yes. This page contains every code from table A99 FOUTCD.AANGIFTE of the Codeboek Douane, part UCC declaration handling. The wording is the official text from that codebook, edition 29 August 2026.
Where are the NCTS error messages?
In the same list, under the NCTS chip. The codes come from the Codeboek Sagitta, part Transit: table 049 functional error codes, table 043 arrival rejection reason (AAR) and table 044 transit rejection reason (ATR). NCTS is not DMS, so an NCTS code is not in A99.
